Interior Renovation and Upgrade of a Duplex Apartment in Barcelona

This is an interior renovation slightly affecting the structure of a duplex apartment in a multi-family residential building in Barcelona.

The Project

The plan is a new indoor layout and the treatment of the existing envelope (both inside and outside where possible) in order to improve qualities related to thermal comfort and to achieve improved energy efficiency of the dwelling and installations.

The Construction

This is an existing dwelling. Work is made on the envelope in order to ensure a continuous thermal insulation, and the external joinery is replaced by high-performance joinery to foster energy efficiency in the dwelling.

Functional Programme

Since this is a duplex apartment, the functional programme can be separated by levels. The access is from the lower level, so this is related to the day zone. When accessing, we encounter the access to the upper level and a study leading directly on to the terrace. The new layout has an additional study with its own bathroom, and the rest of the space is designed for the dining room, the living room and the kitchen, leading directly on to the terrace. The kitchen extends to outdoors allowing for a direct service area outside. On the upper floor there is the night zone consisting of three bathrooms, three bedrooms (one of them is an ensuite bedroom with a walk.in closet) and a study. All the rooms have an outdoor access with stunning views of Barcelona.

Energy Efficiency

New installations, external joinery and both inside and outside (where possible) treatment of the envelope are conducted by means of thermal insulating and ETICS coatings to achieve higher efficiency.
